The princess sat alone in her dark grey room high atop the
Castle of Everdull. Day after day she wished she could go and
see something different, something more exciting than dark grey
all the time. Her walls were bare and lit by candles but even the
candles were unexcited about the light they gave. All they did
was light up the dullness of the grey rooms.
In them, the princess dreamt of a beautiful valley full of flowers of
every colour.

One day she was walking around the dull grey castle
thinking that there must be more to this world than the blah and
blah and grey and dark. Just then she saw something out of
the
corner of her eye. It was a man and he was talking to the king,
the princess’ father.

He lit up the room like a thousand fireflies. The thing she
noticed most were his funny looking but very colourful purple
pants. At first she laughed because she had never seen anything
like them before.

She wasn’t just laughing because they were baggy. She
was laughing because they were purple. Until then, all she had
known was grey. The prince heard her giggling and walked over
to her, smiling.

He said “Hello your princessness. What’s so funny?”. He had
never heard such a beautiful sound as her laughter.
The princess stopped giggling and blushed and said “I was
laughing at your funny purple pants. I’ve never seen anything like
them here in the Castle of Everdull.”

“Well then, I should take you with me and show you many
things that will make you laugh again.”

With that she asked her father permission to go with Prince
Purple Pants. The king said yes. You see, the king had been
worried because he hadn’t seen his princess smile for a very long
time.

The next morning, Prince Purple Pants and the princess got
on their horses and set out on their adventure. As they rode away
from the Castle of Everdull, everything got brighter and prettier.
They rode and rode until the sun began to set. As the sun set, the
princess became a little bit sad.

“Why are you crying?” Purple pants asked the princess.
“Because I’ve seen so many beautiful things today and now
that the sun is setting everything is turning dark and grey again.”

The prince helped her off her horse and together they set up
camp for the night. The prince lit a roaring fire and together they
sat and watched the flames dance in the darkness.

As they sat by the fire, Prince Purple Pants told the princess
all about his travels to places all over the kingdom. He told her
about the colourful birds and animals that were everywhere and
that around every corner there were always beautiful and
colourful and magical things to see. All she had to do is look for
them.

As the fire danced for them she told him of her dream. She
told him about the flowers as high as the sky and of colours she
couldn’t even name. The princess said she even dreamed of a
beautiful valley where flowers danced in the wind and waved at
the clouds, behind which the sun played hide and seek. As she
spoke, she fell asleep in the arms of the prince.

The next morning the princess awoke to the sound of horses
and saw that the prince had cleaned up the camp and was ready
to go. She noticed that the sun was rising and just starting to wink
between the trees. She smiled because all of the colours were
beginning to come alive again.

Prince Purple Pants said it was time to go. The princess
asked “what’s the hurry?”

The prince laughed and said “I’m going to take you to the
valley where the flowers are as high as the sky and where they
dance in the wind and wave at the sun that plays hide and seek
with the clouds.”

She couldn’t believe it. She said “You know where that is?”
“I do,” he replied with a great smile.

They rode all day, and finally came up to the top of a hill
looking down into the valley below. The valley was beautiful and
had rolling grass as far as the eye could see. She even saw some
sheep and a little mist. The princess turned away and frowned.
“This is not the valley of the dancing flowers!” she cried.
Purple Pants laughed and said, “You must have patience -
enjoy the beauty as you go. Look way down there. See that river
that’s surrounded by beautiful grass and trees? In the river are
colourful fish. Those sheep over there drink from the river and
gather and talk about their day and the price of wool.
"Still", the princess said, “It’s not my dream.”

“Be patient, my princess, and enjoy the journey. I’ll show you
your dream before long.”

As they rode, the princess sighed and Prince Purple Pants
laughed and sang as they continued their journey.

At the bottom of the hill, they stopped at the river they could
barely see before. They got off their horses and let them drink
and visit with the sheep.

The prince knelt down by the river and picked the smallest,
most perfect buttercup flower. He gave it to the princess and said
“you see, beauty can be found anywhere, even in the smallest of
things.”

He put it in her hair and for the first time since she laughed
out loud at his purple pants, the princess smiled and laughed out
loud again.

Prince Purple Pants got on his horse and said “C’mon, let’s
go,” and rode off. The princess hurried on to her horse and took
off after the prince.

“Where are you going so fast?” she shouted.
“Hurry up...hurry up,” he yelled back.

She held on tight and rode as fast as she could to catch up
to the prince, who had passed the top of the next hill.
As she came over the top of the hill, the sky got brighter and
she smelled a sweetness like she had never known before.
And there in front of her eyes was the vision in her dream.

It was more beautiful than she had ever dreamed or
imagined. There were thousands of flowers as high as the sky,
dancing in the wind and waving at the clouds, and the sun was
playing hide and seek.

She got off her horse and stared in awe. She smiled as tears
of joy ran down her face.

The Prince with the purple pants had made her dreams
come true.

He yelled from down in the valley that she should choose her
most favourite flower, so he could dig it up and bring it back with
them to the Castle of Everdull.

The princess picked the most perfect one; it was yellow and
purple and pink and orange. The prince dug it up and together
they rode back through the day and night to the princess’ castle.
The next morning, the princess awoke in her own bed in her
dull, grey room and sighed with sadness. Oh no, she thought. It’s
all been just a dream.

Then as the sun rose, she noticed her room begin to come
alive with colour. She could see pink and purple and yellow and
orange and wondered, where did this colour come from?

Out of her window, high atop the Castle of Everdull she saw
a shadow and something move.
She ran to the window and to her amazement the most
beautiful flower as high as the sky was dancing in the wind and
waving at the clouds for her to see, anytime she wanted.

And then, from below, she heard uproarious laughter, and
she saw the prince on his horse.

As he rode away he said, “So now you see.... beauty is right
in front of you all the time.”

That’s what you get for laughing at the Prince with the Purple Pants.
